The romería of San Marcial is the most famous of its kind in Bergara, involving an outdoor picnic beside the chapel. It is also the most popular one, in all senses. At midday on the Sunday following the saint’s day, or on that same day if it is a holiday, a traditional Basque dance called an aurresku is performed in San Marcial, where families and groups of friends (cuadrillas) walk up to spend the day enjoying themselves. At nightfall, a rocket is fired (called a chupinazo) at 9 pm to signal it’s time to start heading back down to the town, accompanied by the music of Basque pipes and drums (txistulariak), accordions (trikitilariak), and impromptu brass bands (charangas).
